In a landmark move for inclusivity and civic engagement, the Haridwar Municipal Corporation has appointed 57-year-old Sonia Bua, a transgender social activist from Bahadrabad, as the official brand ambassador for the city’s cleanliness drive. This pioneering decision marks the first time a transgender individual has been chosen to lead a major civic awareness campaign in Uttarakhand’s holy city.
Municipal officials emphasized that the initiative aims to expand public participation in sanitation initiatives, particularly in and around major religious and cultural gathering spots such as Har-ki-Pauri and local markets. The campaign, set to roll out citywide, includes cleanliness awareness rallies, community outreach events, and youth-focused sanitation education programs.
Speaking about her appointment, Sonia shared how her life’s struggles and advocacy work have prepared her for this role, expressing her commitment to making Haridwar a cleaner and more inclusive city. Local social activists applauded the decision, noting that it enhances visibility for marginalized communities and promotes equality alongside civic responsibility.
Officials also announced plans to extend the campaign to include school and college programs, eco-friendly waste management workshops, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
