India witnessed a major political tragedy on January 28, 2026, as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died in a private plane crash near Baramati airport. The chartered Learjet aircraft was flying from Mumbai when it reportedly caught fire during its landing approach and crashed in an open field. All five people on board, including Pawar, his personal security officer, and two crew members, lost their lives.
Eyewitnesses said the aircraft exploded moments after touching the ground, making rescue operations impossible. Fire brigades and emergency teams reached the spot quickly, but the wreckage was completely burnt. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash.
Ajit Pawar was one of Maharashtra’s most influential political leaders and a key face of state politics for over two decades. Following the incident, the Maharashtra government declared state mourning, and several political leaders including the Prime Minister expressed condolences.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about VIP aviation safety in India. Experts are demanding stricter maintenance checks and improved safety audits for chartered aircraft used by political leaders.
