Heavy winter snowfall in Uttarakhand’s Chakrata region created significant disruption this week as nearly 80 tourists were stranded in the Lokhandi area, the Tyuni-Chakrata-Mussoorie-Maletha National Highway was buried under up to three feet of snow, and access in and out of the area was cut off for several days. Roads were rendered impassable as the snow continued to fall since January 22, trapping visitors who had arrived to enjoy the scenic winter landscape.
Local authorities along with the Public Works Department (PWD) were mobilised to clear the highway, ploughing through heavy drifts and clearing the route so vehicles could move safely. After sustained efforts, officials successfully evacuated the stranded tourists, ensuring their safety and bringing them back to lower elevations where road access had been restored.
Though there are no reports of serious injuries, the incident raised concerns about preparedness for sudden weather changes and the challenges posed by heavy snow events in mountainous regions. Tourism officials have urged visitors planning winter trips to stay updated on weather conditions and road advisories before travelling.
Weather forecasts continue to predict cold conditions in higher altitude areas, and local authorities are advising caution for anyone travelling through hill districts in the coming days.
